After working in academia as a professor of Mathematics and then on Wall Street as a vice president of NYSE's computer software, Karen is now a full-time artist. In 2003, Karen made several life style changes, giving up her executive postion to paint, and to move from Greenwich Village to Woodstock. Recently, she moved to Santa Fe.
Karen's art captures the dynamic interaction between human emotions and physical reality. Her works are vivid images that convey deep feelings for her subjects and their place. They come to life with the play of light and shadow, depth and mass, and color value and temperature. Her friends and fellow artists describe her work as painterly and passionate. Well-traveled viewers will enjoy their psychological journey from Washington State to Washington Square, and from Wall Street to Woodstock and Santa Fe.
At High School graduation Karen won the Award for Art, but chose Mathematics as her career. She kept her interest in art alive in various ways: teaching a course in math and art at the Cooper Union; and participating in an NSF grant for an interdisciplinary course in mathematics, art, and science. In her introductory and advanced college courses in Mathematics she used art concepts to explain the Fibonacci series and the Golden Spiral, Patterns in the Plane, Groups and their Graphs, Perspective and topics in Geometry.
Karen's paintings, however, go beyond her analytical training. To appreciate them, to understand their appeal, follow the light. Feel her subjects come alive. Rustling leaves and shimmering grass, sparkling water and billowing clouds invite you to fascinating, distant places: places you may have never been, places you many never go, but now feel as if you are there. A vase of flowers or a bowl of fruit will tease your senses. You know they are just images, nevertheless, you are tempted to reach for them, to take them with you. This is the artistry of Karen Halbert.
